A rare original Second World War period '1942 Alliance Française London membership card and badge' the well designed interlinked gilt border inlaid with patriotic red, white and blue enamel, the voided centre with 'AF' letters; the membership card is made out to a 'Miss Sheila Bainbridge from Bristol' and ink signed by 'Yvonne Salmon' Secretary General of the organisation between 1921 and 1945. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, enamel intact.
Height 20mm.
During the Second World War the Alliance Française in London became the acting headquarters for the world after the occupation of Paris in June 1940. The Alliance was a non political organisation but the war made an exception of that and aligned itself from day one with General de Gaulle, the Free French and their British Allies.
