A scarce original vintage period 'Widecombe Fair promotional song pin badge' difference in appearance and made of gilt metal and highly enamelled, depicting a farmers grey mare horse with with four country bumpkins in character costume riding on its back and three walking beside. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, no stress marks or damage to the enamel.
Height approx 20mm.
'Widecombe Fair is a well-known Devon folk song about a man called Tom Pearce, whose horse dies after someone borrows it to travel to the fair in Widecombe with his friends. The chorus ends with the names of seven men travelling to the fair: Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney, Peter Davy, Dan'l Whiddon, Harry Hawke, Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all.
